Flash 405, April 2018: “Magnetism” Winners

Flash 405: April 2018 "Magnetism" Winners Exposition Review is pleased to announce the next round of winners of Flash 405! Our April 2018 contest was judged by nationally recognized poet Edwin Bodney, who proposed the theme “Magnetism.” In doing so, he called for writers to explore how “the idea of being magnetized by known and unknown forces leaves an entire field for the many versions of ourselves to live in.”

We found ourselves attracted to many of the entries submitted, but a few stood out about the rest for their inherent tension and beautiful delivery. Read on to discover these powerful pieces for yourself!

Expo Recommends: Los Angeles (and Bay Area) Bookstores

ExpoRecommends_What-should-I-read-next

Normally, our Expo Recommends tackles the question: What should I read next? But what do you do when you find the perfect book to read? Buy it! And where do you buy it from? Yes, you could turn to your computer or device and order said recommended read at the click of the button, but for any book lover asks, “Where’s the fun in that?” The answer: There isn’t any. That’s why we’ve taken the time to focus on some of our favorite bookstores in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. With this trusty guide, you can not only get the book you’re looking for, but also the experience and “waltz among the pages” to go with it.

Exposition Review, Vol III: “Orbit” Launch

ExpoReview-Orbit-CoverExposition Review is thrilled to announce that Vol III: “Orbit” is officially live! After months of reviewing work across genres and our readers staying up long hours and editors passionately debating the merits of their favorites, we narrowed down our final pieces into this year’s annual issue. It’s full of some of the best work we’ve been able to publish.

You can read more about the process, the theme, and our tireless group of supportive volunteers in our Letter from the Editors.

Flash 405, February 2018: “Greed” Winners

Flash405-Greed
We opened our 2018 season of Flash 405 with a call to get selfish… or, more accurately, to explore selfishness, and avarice, and all other delightful and horrific forms of “Greed.” Judge Rebecca Luxton said of her theme that “greed is the beginning of so many great narratives,” and the submissions we received definitely reflected that.

Narrowing down these exceptional submissions was no easy feat, but we’re now excited to announce the winners of Flash 405, February 2018: “Greed”!

Recap: “Share Your Voice!” Seminar with WriteGirl and 826LA

In 2017, Exposition Review had the pleasure of hosting our first seminar and interactive workshop for WriteGirl at The Hatchery. WriteGirl is a fantastic Los Angeles-based non-profit dedicated to mentoring young women and developing their creative writing skills as they progress through junior high and high school, while The Hatchery is a unique co-working space and community of writers in the Larchmont area.

With the success of last year’s workshop–which resulted in the publication of pieces by WriteGirls Vivian Enriquez and Angela He in our “Surface” issue–we were looking forward to once again collaborating with WriteGirl and The Hatchery, but we couldn’t resist expanding our youth-centered #ExpoPresents to another creative writing non-profit: 826LA. This amazing organization provides free programs, including mentoring, workshops, tutoring, and more, to over 9,000 students in the LA area.
